Other insurances
Besides mandatory health insurance, there are other insurance types that you should consider as well.
Contents insurance
Contents insurance covers damage to personal household items, such as furniture, televisions, clothes or sports equipment. Basic cover provides protection against damage caused by fire, natural hazards, water and theft at home. You can also purchase additional cover for other types of damage and risks such as theft away from home and loss.

Private liability insurance
Private liability insurance covers any damage you cause to others. It is optional. You are nevertheless strongly advised to take out this insurance, otherwise you have no protection against liability claims made by third parties.

Motor insurance
Car insurance provides protection for car drivers and owners. Vehicle liability insurance covers third-party claims for damages and is obligatory in Switzerland. Voluntary supplemental or “Kasko” insurance covers any damage you may cause to your car, while passenger accident insurance protects you against the financial consequences of passengers in your vehicle being injured.

Legal protection insurance
Legal protection insurance is a private-law insurance contract designed to protect the policyholder from the financial consequences resulting from legal disputes. Cover ranges from legal advice, counsel and assistance to court and legal fees. There are two different categories: personal legal protection insurance and motor legal protection insurance.
