Private liability insurance
To cover yourself from financial claims linked to a damage you caused, you should consider buying a private liability insurance. It is considered the most important insurance type after health insurance.

Basic private liability coverage
A private liability insurance covers you against claims that third parties can raise against you. This is related to damages that you might have (accidentally) caused to another party or its objects like a car, furniture or any other item. Basic cover provides protection for the most common use cases like:
-
Damages to persons: You hit someone accidentally with your bike and the person breaks her leg; her medical bills will be covered by your private liability insurance
-
Damages to objects: While having a drink at a friend's place you spill wine on the new white couch; a replacement is covered by your private liability insurance
To cover other more specific use cases you can simply add additional coverages as an additional module
Additional coverages
Other types of use cases can be added to the basic coverages by including additional modules. The most common modules are:
-
coverage for damages to third party's financial assets
-
coverage for damages linked to a special hobby like horseriding, flying model planes or drones
-
coverage for damages caused by an accident with a borrowed car
Combination with contents insurance
Private liability insurances are often bought in combination with contents insurance. These two insurance types are the most commonly bought insurance policies right after the obligatory health insurance. Learn more about contents insurance here.
